I don't know about you, but I have always found it a mystery as to the difference between a Misses size 16 and a Women's 14 etc. Then there are Petites and Talls... argh!!!

This is from the Spiegel Catalog and does an excellent job of clearing things up.

How to Measure

To determine your size just follow these simple instructions.

Bust: Measure over the fullest part of your bust.

Waist: Measure around your natural waistline; keep your measuring tape snug but not tight.

High Hip: Measure around the top of your hips, 4" below your waist (Petites, 3 1/2" below waist).

Low Hip: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, 8" below your waist (Petites, 7" below waist).
 
Skirt Lengths
Skirt lengths stated in Spiegel's on-line catalog refer to the measurement from natural waist to hem. This sketch converts inches to real skirt lengths for a 5'6" women in the misses size range.

Misses and Talls
Misses sizes fit women with average figures who are 5'4" to 5'7" tall. Tall sizes fit women 5'7 1/2" to 6' (sizes 6-16).

Women's Sizes
Women's sizes are proportioned to fit women with fuller figure who are 5'4"-5'7" tall. Compared to misses sizes, women's sizes have a slightly lower bustline and are cut fuller, especially at the high hip.
